Aberdeen’s Title Hopes: Why Baji Believes Celtic’s Dominance Will Continue

Aberdeen

The Glory Days of Aberdeen FC

Doug Rougvie, a legendary centre-half, was instrumental during Aberdeen‘s golden era under Sir Alex Ferguson. The club dominated Scottish football in the 1980s, winning two league titles, three Scottish Cups, the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, and the European Super Cup. Those were the days when Aberdeen overshadowed both Celtic and Rangers, establishing themselves as a force in European football.

The Modern Challenge: Competing with Celtic’s Financial Power

Despite Aberdeen’s recent success—including breaking their record points total—Rougvie remains skeptical about their chances of dethroning Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.

“To match Celtic and their spending powers, we can’t do that. I don’t think we can go much further unless we can match Celtic in their spending.”

Rougvie recalls a telling statement from Sir Alex Ferguson: “Aberdeen will have to be pleased with third place because the Old Firm’s there.” While Rangers’ recent struggles have opened up second place, Rougvie believes Aberdeen’s ceiling remains below Celtic’s dominance.

Why Second Place is the Realistic Target

With Hearts returning to form and Dundee United resurging, Aberdeen’s battle for second place will be fierce. Rougvie acknowledges that while he would love to see his former club lift the title, financial disparities make it unlikely.

“If we get second place next year, do well in Europe, and go on a good cup run, I will be delighted.”

Derek McInnes’ Remarkable Impact

Since taking over in 2013, Derek McInnes has revitalized Aberdeen, leading them to a League Cup triumph and consistent top-three finishes. Rougvie praises McInnes’ recruitment and tactical improvements but warns that success could tempt him away.

“Football is that sort of game—we are all mercenaries. If he can better himself, why would you hold him back?”

Aberdeen: A Feeder Club by Nature?

Historically, Aberdeen has sold key players even at their peak. Rougvie points out that despite their European success, the club has always operated as a stepping stone for talent.

“We’ve always been a feeder club. Even when we were the best team in Europe, we were still selling players.”

Baji Verdict: Can Aberdeen Break the Celtic Stronghold?

While Aberdeen continues to punch above its weight, financial realities suggest Celtic’s supremacy will persist. For now, second place and deep cup runs remain the club’s most achievable ambitions.
